The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very heavy reduction on the nose—I wonder whether this will ever shift. It shrouds the fruit. The palate is, to quote the late Bill Blatch, "soft and squidgy," missing some grip and focus. There is some attractive fruit at the core of this wine but it needs to address that reduction. Very hard to judge this and my score is based on that reduction alleviating. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru contains 10% whole bunches with 70% new oak. This is much more reduced than the Mazoyères so is difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good structure and symmetry, a keen thread of acidity and gently building red fruit leading to a complex and persistent finish. Great potential, this is a superb Mazis.
An impressively layered nose combines violets, spice, earth, plum and dark berries and more subtle wood influence. There is good size and muscle to the rich, velvety and mouth coating medium weight flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration along with evident power on the lightly mineral-inflected, balanced and highly persistent finish that also reflects just a touch of warmth.
