Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2020-2035, Mark Squires, Aug 2020

The 2015 Xisto, an old-vines field blend released only in certain years, is Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, all aged for 20 months in French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Far too marked by wood just now, this also shows off all of its great potential. Sensual in texture, this concentrated Xisto easily coats the palate and fills the mouth. It shows finesse and balance as well. What it needs at this point is to pull in the wood and acquire complexity. That will only happen with time. While it is balanced enough to drink well right now—it's pretty good!—it needs a couple of years in the cellar to show everything it has. Given the price, you don't want to waste it. Come back around 2023, roughly, for results that might be closer to peak. There were 400 cases produced.

Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2021-2030, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Mar 2020

Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, along with other local varieties from old vines, from the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior subregions. They are hand-harvested and then destemmed and crushed. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel conical vats. Rack and return is performed during fermentation. Aged 20 months in 225-litre oak barrels. Bottled July 2018. Still bright and deep cherry red with no sign of age in the colour. Highly spiced dark fruit, rocky and peppery at the same time. As it opens, the floral character of the Touriga Nacional starts to show. Still all so very primary in fruit, barely seems to have aged. Again as it opens, a touch minty. On the palate, chewy, more oaky than on the nose, deep and rich in both dark fruit and the Touriga perfume, lots of spice and a taut freshness on the finish, the tannins starting to become silky though they still have a way to go. Powerful but with potential for greater elegance if you can be patient. (JH)
