The 2023 Chardonnay Mae Estate opens with a lovely bouquet of citrus curd, fennel and pastry cream, followed by a spongey, pure and succulent palate. The finish is understated and driven by an even-keeled finish that lingers with bright, chiseled acidity. This is a stellar example of the northern corridor of Sta. Rita Hills, and it will be an increasingly formidable presence in the Tyler roster as the vines mature.

Organically farmed, but not so far certified. Planted in a north–south orientation in 2016 on clay-loam and sandy loam formed over siliceous shale and marine sediment, at 250–300 ft of elevation. Whole-cluster pressed and fermented with native yeast in 228- and 500-litre French oak barrels (full, natural malo), followed by a 12-month élevage in 15–20% new oak and an additional 6 months in stainless steel. Very distinctive nose with lots of promise of salinity and then crystalline texture. Spontaneous and long. Very fresh lemon-barley cleanness. Long again. Impressive! Very transparent. (JR)
