Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2024-2032, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2024

The 2005 Château Ormes De Pez checks in as 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 40% new oak. It’s showing a touch of maturity with a amber edge as well complex notes of chocolatey red and black fruits, leather, and tobacco-driven aromas and flavors. This meaty, old-school, medium-bodied effort should be drunk over the coming 7-8 years or so.

Ruby red colour, gentle bricking around the edges, enjoyably brambled fruits on the finish. This is a classic 2005 at the right moment to drink - effortless, unfussy, fruit-filled but not overblown, heading towards tertiary flavours of tobacco and undergrowth showcasing the charm and finesse of St Estèphe as it ages. Fine tannins that embrace and push forward the fruit. No blockbuster character here, but simple pleasures to share. Easy to recommend.

The 2005 Ormes de Pez is an attractive, mid-weight Saint-Estèphe. Now fully mature, the 2005 is best enjoyed over the next few years. Sweet floral, spice and earthy notes give the 2005 an attractive sense of lift that perks up the red berry fruit.

Tasted blind. Dense and complex. Round and correct with freshness, ripe fruit and fine tannins. (JR)
