A big, rich wine, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru emphasizes extract and density, followed by gorgeous aromatics that give the wine its sense of dimension. Dried rose petals, white pepper and blood orange add elements of intrigue in an intense, resonant Chambertin that is likely to require quite a bit of cellaring. Power and finesse collide in a Chambertin of true pedigree.

Good medium red. Aromas of maraschino cherry, raspberry, minerals, brown spices, game and crushed rock display a cool medicinal reserve. Then wonderfully sweet on the palate, with an almost confectionery quality to its red fruit flavors leavened by menthol and mineral elements. Shuts down quickly in the glass, with its serious underlying spine quickly taking over. The youthfully austere, tannic finish conveys a tactile impression of solidity and outstanding grip, but without any impression of weight. All in reserve today, and in need of extended cellaring.
The 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru, which like the Clos de Bèze is matured in 30% new oak, has a tighty-wound bouquet with broody red berry fruit, oyster shell and granitic scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip. This seems more linear than the Clos-de-Bèze at the moment, but there is very good depth and a precise saline finish that will obviously need time and patience. I hope that it gains just a little more flesh by the time of bottling as this is a very fine Chambertin in the making.
