Lurid violet. Powerful, smoke-tinged aromas of blackberry, cherry preserves and olive paste are lifted by a sexy, building floral element. Sweet, seamless and broad in the mouth, offering densely packed black and blue fruit liqueur and violet pastille flavors supported and sharpened by a core of juicy acidity. The impressively lively, penetrating finish features slow-building tannins, firm, spicy cut and superb persistence.

A blend of 90% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 4% Mourvèdre, made with 33% whole cluster and aged 20 months in 90% new oak, the 2017 G2 has a medium to deep ruby color and open, spicy nose with mint chocolate, cured meats, white pepper and floral aromas over a core of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and red berry jam. The medium to full-bodied palate is intense and inviting, with great freshness, a grainy frame and loads of savory fruits, finishing long and layered. 215 cases were made.
The more Syrah-dominated 2017 G2 Vineyard (there's 4% each of Grenache and Mourvèdre) offers an fresh, juicy, vibrant bouquet of blueberries, crushed violets, blood orange, and ground pepper as well as a floral quality that would easily lead me to believe there was some Viognier in the blend. Again, the purity of fruit is remarkable. There are few estates in California today that are more exciting than Don Burns’ Turtle Rock. Pulling from some of the top vineyards on the westside of Paso Robles and making the wines as Justin Smith’s Saxum estate, Burns has consistently produced some of the wines of the vintage since his first releases in 2014. As I wrote in the past, readers interested in finding the next up and coming superstar in Paso Robles need to put Don and Claudia Burns’ Turtle Rock estate at the top of their list.
