Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2026-2050, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Oct 2024

Fermented with 50% whole clusters and aged in barrels for 15 to 16 months, the Nieder-Flörsheim 2022 Frauenberg Spätburgunder GG opens with a dark, concentrated and juicy cherry bouquet that reveals discreet reduction and a fascinating herbaceous and floral nose reminiscent of woodruff, Melissa (lemon balm) and olive oil. Juicy but firm and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied and fleshy Pinot with a stringent tannin structure. This is an intense and tight, dry and rather masculine Frauenberg with remarkable purity, salinity, finesse and elegance. Tasted at the domaine in May 2024, two months after bottling.

The 2022 Spätburgunder Nieder-Flörsheimer Frauenberg Grosses Gewächs opens with smokiness that wraps itself around crunchy red cherry. A riper tone plays on the nose, but the palate melts into a veil of translucent, pure, bright fruit, held in a fine, silky spiderweb of tannins—the slight crunch and crackle of fine structure. This has grip, verve and vivid brightness. Wonderfully mouthwatering and totally fine-boned, it’s exquisitely elegant. (Bone-dry)

The vines are mass-selection French clones. 50% stems included. Foot-trodden and basket-pressed. Aged in used French oak. Mid to light crimson. A little more peppery than the Bürgel and less immediately herbal/stemmy. Is there a note of iron/blood here? Slightly darker fruited, vibrant, pure and just a little more reserved. On the palate, this feels more 'serious' than the Bürgel, more constrained, and also less of a chameleon, not as open. The acidity seems more marked and the tannins a little firmer, suggesting it needs slightly longer to mesh but perhaps has longer ageing potential? Elegant, layered, the extremely persistent finish highlighting the dark-fruited purity. (JH)
