Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2013-2023, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Dec 2013

Moving to Gigondas and the estate’s classic cuvee, the 2010 Gigondas La Tour Sarrasine is a knockout blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre that comes from 45-year-old vines and higher elevation, terraced vineyards. Smelling like an open air street market in the south of France, with classic Gigondas spice, pepper, leather and sweet red and black fruit, this medium to full-bodied, rich and surprisingly polished wine has great mid-palate depth and sweet tannin. It will drink well for over a decade. Founded in 1905, Clos des Cazaux is run today by Maurice Vache and his two sons, Jean-Michel and Frederic. Covering roughly 60 acres in Gigondas and 37 in Vacqueyras, this estate produces a number of cuvees, with the style being predominantly traditional; however, some new oak barrels are used for the Syrah. This is a rock-solid lineup of wines. Importers: Kysela Pere et Fils, Winchester, VA; tel. (540) 722-9228; Arborway Imports, Lexington, MA; tel. (781) 863-1753; and Riservati, Seattle, WA; tel. Saturated ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of dark berry preserves, peppery spices and potpourri. Fleshy and open-knit, showing very good energy to its blackberry and boysenberry flavors. Becomes spicier with air and finishes very long, with strong cut and lingering florality.

A step up is the 2010 Gigondas Cuvée de la Tour Sarrasine. The same blend and elevage as the ’09, it sports a traditional, structured feel, with loads of gamy, wild garrigue, mineral, and leather qualities all emerging from the glass. Quite structured on the palate, with a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, solid underlying structure, and serious length, this knockout Gigondas will benefit from short-term cellaring and drink well for 12-15 years.

(75% grenache, 15% syrah and 10% mourvedre): Bright purple. Spicy cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas are brightened by white pepper and lavender, with an exotic apricot pit note adding complexity. Ripe, concentrated dark berry flavors show good precision and energy, with a spicy note adding vibrancy to the back end. Closes up on the finish, which displays a persistent flavor of tangy berry skin.
