From slate soils covering limestone sub-soils, Eva Fricke's 2019 Lorcher Krone Riesling Trocken is clear and intense in its golden citrus color. It opens with a deep, chalky bouquet with super ripe, intense and elegant golden fruit aromas intertwined with notes of milled chalk. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, round and lush, very elegant and balanced Riesling that seems to sail toward the border to off-dry. The 14% alcohol is remarkably well integrated in the extracted and firm phenolic structure, and the wine shows no signs of bitterness. I got the best result after I kept the open bottle for 18 (!) days, which means: This monolithic Riesling needs a lot of time to develop. I wish I had this Krone in a blind tasting with slate and limestone Rieslings from Alsace grands crus or even the Clos-Ste-Hune. Tasted from AP 7 20 in January 2021.

Gosh, the numbers of this wine (price and alcohol) are unusual to say the least! Much richer, heavier and more reticent than the Mélange 2019 just tasted. Almost spicy on the nose. It may technically qualify as a QbA trocken but it tastes quite sweet – because of the alcohol? Is this Eva's equiavlent of FX Pichler's Unendlich? It lacks the immediate flirtatious appeal of the Mélange and, to be fair, will not be released before 1 December 2020 so is presumably very much work in progress. Slightly hot finish. It may well blossom into something marvellous, and is certainly impeccably clean, but it's an extreme (hot summer?) expression of Riesling. (JR)
