From their inaugural vintage, the Reynvaan’s 2007 Syrah In the Rocks represents a co-fermentation with 4% Viognier, and, as proves typical for this estate’s Syrahs, weighs in at a relatively modest 14% alcohol. A positive sense of reduction is displayed by bacon fat, sage, fennel, and juniper berry that mingle with fresh cherry and cassis as well as sea-breeze salinity, alkalinity, and scents of kelp. In the mouth this is pungently herbal and tartly red berry-tinged, exhibiting a bit of tannic chew but finishing with abundant sap and vivacity not to mention multifaceted interactivity. As impressive as it is, every indication is that this will shed some of its reduction and become even more expressive over the course of the next several years. Mike and Gale Reynvaan purchased their home site near the base of the Blue Mountains south of Walla Walla in 2004, although their first-planted site was In The Rocks – neighboring to Cayuse’s En Cerise – the following year. Christophe Baron helped arrange for that purchase after agreeing to become their consultant (his only such gig). “He said ‘no!’ which progressed to ‘hell no!’” relates Mike Reynvaan, “but at last he said ‘I’ll do it if I have carte blanche.’ I knew enough French to know that meant trouble!” Planting around the impeccably-, indeed (in keeping with Reynvaan’s premonition) lavishly-equipped winery began in 2007, incorporating some of Baron’s vine selections, but principally a wealth of clones several of which aren’t represented at Cayuse; and that vineyard – which has thus far been exclusively dry-farmed; and which, at 1,500 feet, is amazingly one of the highest in the state – was dubbed Foothills In The Sun. Matt Reynvaan is in charge of organically farming that site as well as of the estate’s day-to-day winemaking; Baron and his crew collaborate in farming The Rocks. Eighty percent of the Reynvaans’ total plantings are Syrah. Extremely low yields, block-by-block fermentation and conscious exploration of terroir differences across small distances are fundamental to the Reynvaans’ approach, as is the determination they share with Baron that Reynvaan not become “a mini-Cayuse,” but establish its own protocols and style. “I do whatever I like to do,” asserts Baron, “and there’s a market for it. The same has to be true here, and every year the Reynvaan style is being fine-tuned.” Fermentation – usually co-fermentation with diverse white grapes where Syrah is concerned; and usually incorporating at least some stems – takes place exclusively in small stainless steel tanks and involves both pump-overs and punch-downs. Elevage is in barriques, though some 600-liter barrels (different in origin from those employed at Cayuse) are in the immediate future. Tel. (509) 525-3462

(with 4% viognier) Good full red. Fascinating aromatic nose combines musky raspberry, redcurrant, red cherry and bacon fat, plus a hint of wild herbs; became increasingly gamey and C ote-Rotie-like as it opened in the glass Supple, smoky and savory; not hugely deep but suave and nuanced for a wine from two-year-old vines, showing attractive floral lift to its lightly saline red fruit flavors. The smoky quality carries through the lingering, firm-edged finish.

The 2007 In The Rocks Syrah was co-fermented with Viognier. Medium purple-colored, it offers up a sexy perfume of bacon, game, Asian spices, incense, lavender, blueberry, and plum. Dense, rich, and full on the palate, it has the structure to evolve for several years, but a succulent fleshiness makes it approachable now. Reynvaan Family Vineyards’ first vintage was 2007. All of the fruit is from their Walla Walla estate vineyards, planted by them from scratch. The principal reason for the current and future success of the venture is that their viticultural and wine consultant is Christophe Baron of Cayuse. This is the only other winery that Baron works with, and that says all you need to know. Tel. (509) 525-3462; www.reynvaanfamilywinery.com

Co-fermented with roughly 6.5% Viognier and 1.5% Marsanne, the 2007 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah In the Rocks has big, intense aromatics of spiced blackberries, animal fur, saucisson, smoke and freshly laid asphalt. Unique and complex with a decidedly floral streak, this opens up in the glass and the fruit starts to shine through the savory notes. It’s medium to full bodied in the mouth with ripe fruit, a solid texture and a medium length finish. Drink now – 2020.
