The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is the richest wine in the range, offering up aromas of sweet dark berries, orange zest and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and textural palate built around sweet, powdery tannins.

The 2023 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a bashful bouquet at first, unfurling with peony and iris-infused dark berry fruit. There is a hint of iodine here. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and good acidity, a little crunchy toward the finish where it could use a little more flesh. I do like the cracked black pepper theme that runs through this Pommard. Afford it four or five years in bottle.
