Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2006-2015, Robert Parker, Aug 2003

A new offering, the 2001 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard (14% alcohol) possesses an evolved nose of sweet blackberry liqueur intermixed with spice and sweet oak. Surprisingly, the palate is closed, and the finish hard and tannic. While this effort does not appear to have the potential of its siblings, there is still a lot to it. Perhaps I caught it on a closed day. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015. Tel. (707) 963-0940

(this 5.8-acre parcel of 100-year-old vines literally surrounds, and is owned by, the public library in St. Helena) Medium ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of raw black cherry and licorice. Creamy on entry, then high-pitched and a bit tart, with rather strong acidity currently clashing with the wine's firm tannins. Not an easy style of wine - and especially difficult to taste following the Hayne zinfandel.
