Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, cherry compote, garrigue and peppery spices on the perfumed nose. Focused red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, showing very good clarity and spicy lift. The cherry quality comes back strong on the persistent finish, which is given shape by silky, harmonious tannins.

Still not yet bottled, the 2012 Gigondas showed considerably better this go around and I’m confident it will end up being an outstanding wine. Made from 75% Grenache and 25% Mourvèdre, it offers impressive ripeness in its smoked herbs, garrigue, olive and pepper-laced Grenache fruit. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and even sexy, it will drink nicely on release and evolve gracefully over the following decade or more.
'We like our Gigondas a little rustic compared with our more elegant Châteauneuf. We are Mourvèdre maniacs in Gigondas.' 20% Mourvèdre, 10-15% Syrah, the rest Grenache. Rich and spicy – a bit of a plum pudding that reminds me of a compote of blackberries. Lots of tannin underneath – much more than the northern Rhône 2012s. (JR)
