Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2025-2032, Eric Guido, Vinous, Oct 2024

The 2021 Double Lucky #8 is spicy from the first tilt of the glass, wafting up with notes of dried strawberry, mint leaf and orange sorbet complicated by hints of olive tapenade. Wickedly fresh, it sweeps across the palate with a juicy blend of black raspberries and sweet spice, gaining a saturating tension toward the close. It finishes long and staining yet only gently tannic, leaving resonances of wild blueberries and lavender to linger.

While I'm not sure of the blend, I suspect the 2021 Double Lucky is mostly Grenache with a mix of other varieties. It has a beautiful kirsch and darker berry-driven profile revealing gorgeous spring flower, iron, rose, and peppery nuances. Medium-bodied on the palate, it has a supple, seamless profile, ultra-fine tannins, and a wonderful sense of freshness and purity. It's drinking beautifully today and should easily evolve for a decade.

The best vintage yet, the 2021 Double Lucky #8 begins with a dark red-fruited nose with notions of spiced plum, black cherry skin, hot rocks and baked clay with a delightful herbal essence in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers plenty of ripe cherry essence along with notes of sour plum, potpourri, a delightful spicy notion of pink peppercorn, fine-grained tannins and succulent acidity. With a long, lingering finish that has me coming back for more, this beauty will remain food-friendly for years to come. This really should be double the price. The wine rested for 21 months in neutral French oak barrels. Nicely done. Just over 7,000 bottles were produced.
