After a precarious run, the 2001 La Conseillante was as a shoo-in. It has a seductive mélange of red and black fruit, those hints of truffle and white pepper coming through, youthful and brushing off its 21 years effortlessly. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, plenty of crisp black fruit laced with sage and still offering that cheeky soupçon of curry powder on the persistent finish. This is now reaching its peak and is just a lovely Pomerol.

A finessed and balanced vintage, this is still full of soft brambled fruits and sculpted fine tannins at 20 years old. So much depth and power, this is utterly gorgeous, stretching out into tobacco and cured leather. Bernard Nicolas was the owner and winemaker at the time, with no outside consultant. Harvest September 22 to 30, 43hl/h yields.
81% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc. Harvested from 22 September to 30 September. Yields 43 hl/ha. Fermented in stainless steel, fully temperature controlled and vatted for 24 days. 80% in new French oak barrels. pH 3.8. Tasted blind – and correctly identified that this was the wine in double magnum. Even deeper than the first 2001 (the wine in 75-cl bottle). Not much nose. Much less than the first 2001. Thick and quite tannic with some furriness. And much more tannin than the first 2001. Not yet evolved in terms of flavour – still lots of furry tannins. (JR)
