The 1989 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru may well have had the most attractive bouquet out of some 20-odd wines at this tasting. Fully mature yet fresh, the aromas were at that liminal point between primary and secondary fruit - impressive after 28-years. Red cherries, crushed strawberry, a touch of undergrowth and tobacco, all with wonderful definition and poise. The palate is medium-bodied with what you might call “solid” tannin. No, it is not a Clos de Vougeot with finesse and you could argue that is feels a little rustic. But there is personality and charm here, the spicy vein lending a little fieriness towards the finish that is welcomed. Very fine. Tasted at the Clos de Vougeot retrospective at Clos de Vougeot.
