The two special cuvees are both as good as wine can get. The 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape la Combe des Fous is the more pure, elegant and seamless of the two, but it’s still a huge wine that has overflowing notions of smoked meats, ripe black currants, toasted spice, liquid smoke and garrigue. It’s utterly seamless on the palate, with fine tannin, no hard edges and incredible purity of fruit. It’s firing on all cylinders but certainly has another decade or more of prime drinking.

Glass-staining ruby. Deep, smoky aromas of cassis, blueberry, beef jerky and graphite, with a zesty cracked pepper note adding urgency. Round, fleshy dark berry flavors gain sweetness with air and pick up a sexy floral quality. Leaves smoke and mineral notes behind on the sappy, very persistent finish. This is one for the cellar.
Inky ruby. Pungent, strongly perfumed bouquet of ripe dark berries, cherry compote, olive and floral oils. Smooth, palate-coating mulberry and kirsch flavors are complicated by candied lavender and rose qualities that gain power with aeration. The floral element dominates the very long, spicy, strikingly pure finish. This is extremely sexy now but clearly destined for a long life.
