Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2024-2038, Neal Martin, Oct 2024

The 2004 Giscours has a respectable bouquet given the growing season—well-defined, traditional claret in every way with shades of forest floor and graphite. Well-balanced with slightly dry tannins, it's missing a little backbone towards the finish. I suspect it will not improve with bottle age.

Darker fruits evident on the colour, with leafy aromatics, this is a classic year, full of blackberry, billberry and mint notes, with juicy salted cracker salinity through the finish. Great balance, an old school vintage in the best sense of the word. Excellent yields, over 50hl/h. Good for drinking now. 50% new oak for aging, Didier Forêt technical director and Jacques Boissenot consultant. Harvest September 30 to October 16.

Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 2004 Château Giscours is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot picked between September 30 and October 16. It has a very pleasant bouquet with ripe blackcurrant, raspberry coulis, mineral and light violet scents that blossom nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is not a complex Giscours, more conservative and a little austere. Yet you have to commend the freshness and the finesse towards the finish, as it delivers delicate tarry notes on the aftertaste. Drinking perfectly now, you could cellar this for the next 10-15 years. Tasted June 2015.
