Very heavy bottle with a punt! From HK wine importer Paulo Pong's UK cellar with a very torn label. It was clearly bottled by a merchant but the only clue to its identity was a torn image of a red shield. Complex nose but quite a bit of acidity on the palate (it's a St-Estèphe, after all). With time in the glass it became mellower but then rather died in the glass. Serving time is clearly critical for wines of this age. I've suggested the wine had quite a long drinking window because of the reputation and concentration of the 1945 vintage. (JR)

The 1945 Calon-Segur is a powerful, dense, dark garnet-colored wine with plenty of earth, mineral, and black fruits in its nose. Although there is still tannin present, this is a formidably concentrated, thick, hugely extracted, amazingly youthful wine. It can be drunk now or cellared for another 25-30 years.

Wedding gift lists traditionally include wine glasses or cutlery, but in 1718, Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, the owner of Château Lafite and Château Latour and president of the Bordeaux parliament, received a rather more impressive present: Château Calon.
