A blend of 90% Grenache and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, the 1990 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve Des Celestins is pure brilliance and another perfect wine drinking at full maturity. It’s as complex, layered, and nuanced as they come, with that classic Bonneau magic in its garrigue, smoked meats, leather, pepper, and who knows what else. (I’ll often think of a street market in the south of France when smelling these wines.) Full-bodied, pure, layered, and seamless on the palate, it has a more seductive, seamless style when compared to the 1989 and has sweet, mostly resolved tannins, flawless balance, and incredible length. If forced to pick a desert island wine, this is in my top two to three wines. Drink 2026-2036.

Dark crimson. Rich and spicy with some peppery notes as though there were quite a bit of Syrah in here?? Still amazingly youthful. Indeed it seemed even more youthful in 2009 than it had done nine years earlier. Atypical for a Châteauneuf somehow, though not unlike a light port. (JR)
One of the greatest wines ever produced ... anywhere ... is the 1990. Having consistently merited 100 points (if my scoring system went higher, it would be there), it continues to perform like a young wine, yet is accessible enough to be appreciated for its extraordinary combination of power, complexity, and majestic layers of flavor. The color is a dark plum/ruby to the edge. The monumental bouquet offers up aromas of liquified charcoaled beef intermixed with pepper, smoke, creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, truffles, and new saddle leather. This full-bodied, viscous, prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape must be tasted to be believed. It is more like a food than a beverage. Anticipated maturity: now-2030. This very old-school property makes the most unique Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are fantastically complex and Boneauu made it as it would have been produced 100 years ago in the commune, using methods that familiar to any of the 11 generations of vignerons in his family who preceded him.
