The 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin opens with pronounced tobacco, melted licorice, dried red fruits, forest floor and garrigue . Full-bodied and concentrated, the 2005 shows outstanding mid-palate intensity framed by firm tannins. This is not the most elegant expression of Chaupin, but the energy and drive are undeniable. Enjoy this beauty over the next five years.

An awesome effort, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin comes from the cooler, northeast corner of the appellation and is 100% Grenache. Spring flowers, licorice, violets, crushed rock and layers of sweet Grenache fruit all flow to a full-bodied, clean, elegant 2005 that has everything in the right place. Drinking brilliantly now, it should continue to dish out loads of pleasure over the coming decade.
Inky violet. Fresh blackberry and boysenberry scents are complemented by olive, dark chocolate and anise. Weighty and sweet but focused, with juicy acidity adding lift and supple tannins extending through the finish. Manages to avoid being porty or overblown but this has remarkably deep dark fruit.
