Punteggio 87+/100 · Da bere 2019-2035, Neal Martin, Mar 2018

The 2014 Poujeaux has a rather muffled bouquet that lacks the brightness of its peers. It feels a little earthy and leathery, hints of pressed flowers emerging with time, though it does require more intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin on the entry. Chewy and more sinewy than I expect, a slight menthol character towards the finish. It delivers the density without quite the same degree of complexity and finesse. Give it another couple of years. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Some complexity on the nose already. Broad and for once the fruit is the dominant factor – and it seems ripe enough. Graphite with a very dry end. I would not be surprised if this were a St-Estèphe. But everything is in the right place. (JR)

Deep crimson. Attractive, almost Margaux-like perfume. Real polish with vigour and fruit on the mid palate. Massive energy and persistence. Well done! (JR)

The 2014 Poujeaux has a slight mulchy scent on the nose that detracted from the clarity and complexity of the aromatics. The palate is quite structured with rather dry tannins, moderate weight but attenuating towards the pinched finish. This showed better in barrel and so hopefully it will improve in bottle. It just seems a bit "lost" at the moment. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
