Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2022-2045, Neal Martin, Oct 2019

The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has quite a lot of oak on the nose, although it seems in sync with the redcurrant and cranberry fruit underneath. It is fragrant and become increasingly floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of red fruit and impressive mineralité . This is one of the most terroir-driven Cortons of the vintage, presumably its limestone soils are expressed on the finish. Promising. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

(these 65-year-old vines escaped the frost; vinified with two-thirds whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak): Healthy full red. Aromas of cherry and currant show a chocolatey ripeness. Plush and silky in the mouth, but more about volume today than flavor intensity. Red fruit and savory mineral flavors are accented on the broad back end by notes of licorice and herbs; one is aware of the whole clusters here. The dusty tannins reach the front teeth. This wine has a tendency to absorb its wood and stems quickly, noted Sieve, which probably explains why it's a bit out of sorts right now.

The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, from 65 year old vines, is two-thirds whole cluster with 50% new oak. The bouquet is introverted at first and only gradually unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite refined tannin, grippy in the mouth at the moment with quite a masculine, lightly peppered finish that should soften if you can leave the bottle to mellow for 3 or 4 years. I am just looking for more panache to come through here.
