Note di degustazione
Closer to the Tanaro River, Sorì San Lorenzo produces a naturally more muscular style. It was the first site that Gaja bottled as a single vineyard in 1967, and is their most prized today. But in the approachable 2020 vintage, it is about much more than pure muscle. Delicate florals mingle with the lift of blood-orange aromatics. The wine's firm structure shows itself on the palate, with an iron-edged framework, full of earth and blood, but there's a mineral backbone and seamless ripeness to the fruit. Unsurprisingly impressive, as we only expect from the great house of Gaja.

The Gaja 2020 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo has bright cherry, currant and underbrush. This wine is very pretty in the mouth, especially if you considered the silky nature of the weightless tannins. The San Lorenzo is fueled by a long finish and does not drop off on the mid-palate. It keeps going strong with red fruits, high notes and balanced acidity. The wood tannins are melted into the wine's fine texture.
'Dry and mild winter and spring, followed by a warm summer with occasional thunderstorms, then cooler days until the harvest.' Poured from magnum. Just mid ruby. Great depth of raspberry fruit on the nose but still quite subdued and tight. Just a hint of fennel seed. Gorgeous, supple and compact with fine but persistent tannins running through the fruit. Elegant, light of touch and very long. (WS)
The 2020 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is ample and potent, with tons of mid-palate intensity and palate-staining resonance. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, gravel and dried herbs abound. As is so often the case, Sorì San Lorenzo is the most inward.
