Punteggio 89-91/100 · Da bere 2004-2010, Pierre Rovani, Jun 2003

For the first time since he’s been working the parcel, in 2001 Bernard Dugat was compelled to chaptalize the Vosne-Romanee Vieilles Vignes (73-year old vines, harvested at 28 hectoliters per hectare). Its powerful aromas display violet-laced red cherries. A concentrated, detailed, medium-bodied wine, it bursts forth with copious quantities of red and black fruits that are intermingled with new oak. Projected maturity: 2004-2010. No offense to Peter Weygandt, this estate’s importer, but can anyone think of an easier job than having to sell Bernard Dugat’s wines? For the past decade, this 7.5 hectare (18.53 acre) domaine has consistently produced exceptional wines, a testimony to the relentless pursuit of quality exhibited by Dugat, his wife, and children. “Yes, it’s true that we live in the vineyards, working from morning to night, but the primary reasons we don’t have the same problems as many others in Burgundy is that we concentrate on having low yields and are fortunate enough to have old vines,” sais Bernard Dugat. Importer: Weygandt-Metzler, Peter Weygandt, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800

Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2008-2018, Jancis Robinson MW, Jan 2003

Extremely deep colour. Big, round, thick and sweet. Quite different in style from most other wines tasted. Full, rich, flattering at first but still brutal and needs lots of time. (Cask sample) (JR)

Bright ruby. Cassis, blackberry, bitter chocolate, smoke and minerals on the nose. Sweeter and softer than the Evocelles; more fruity and floral but less dense, and thus a bit slighter today. But this, too, possesses sound framing acidity. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent.
