Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is more fruit-forward on the nose with ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry aromas, a pleasant touch of reduction that recedes with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, the fleshy cassis-tinged fruit offset by a fine thread of acidity, leading to an energetic and virile finish. This should give plenty of drinking pleasure over the next decade. Tasted September 2016.

(Boillot vinified this wine with 30% whole clusters, describing it as an experiment): Good bright red. Slightly peppery aromas of spicy red berries and black cherry lifted by a subtle floral topnote. Salty, tactile and concentrated, displaying lovely savory depth and inner-mouth tension. Shows the medicinal quality of classic young Clos Vougeot without any hard edges. Finishes with nicely refined tannins and noteworthy lingering flavor.

(from the Grand Monpertuis section of the Clos, not far from Grands-Echézeaux; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Deep, bright red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice and wild herbs are lifted by a peppery topnote. Densely packed and gripping, communicating an exhilarating sugar/acid balance and a saline complexity to its black fruit flavors. At once powerful and elegant, this wine finishes with mouthdusting tannins and excellent breadth and energy. The inclusion of whole clusters has contributed freshness and length, notes Guillaume Boillot.

Based in Meursault and farming some of the finest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune, Henri Boillot is a leading address in Burgundy. He crafts fine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but the estate is best known for its flagship monopole vineyard, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos de la Mouchère.
