2007 Quintessa Red

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenѐre. ‘The 2007 growing season was a year that despite minor weather drama resulted in a truly fine vintage. The early winter kicked off the first of three consecutive dry winter seasons. February rains quenched the vines’ thirst and cool days delayed development. Alternating cold and hot weather before bloom limited fertilisation of the berries, keeping crop levels below average. A cool early summer allowed even, slow growth until the sun unleashed its heat in August and early September, encouraging flavours and ripening. The end of the season was moderate and harvest rewarded us with an exceptional crop of beautifully rich, ripe and balanced fruit, one of the best of the decade.’ Carmenère here started as a nod to Chile, planted with Petit Verdot in 1999. But it’s done really well here according to winemaker Rebekah Wineburg: plush mid palate like Merlot but fresher and more savoury than Merlot. Handles the long season and heat well. Estate director Rodrigo Soto thinks it should be no more than a minor ingredient. Looks very deep, youthful crimson. Fresh and tight and very focused. Not at all like the overripe, sweet norm. Just gorgeous. A coolish season has resulted in a very fine wine. (JR)
