The intensely citrus colored 2016 Riesling Mölsheim, from younger vines on stony soils of the Frauenberg and Zellerweg, offers a pure, fresh and stony nose with lemon, herbal and crushed stone aromas. On the palate, this is a very elegant and well-balanced Riesling with a long and creamy-textured finish but also fine, ripe acidity and fine tannins. A touch of gooseberries on the salty-piquant aftertaste.

Tart-edged lady apple is accented on the nose and on an infectiously juicy palate by chamomile, chervil, chalk dust and sea breeze. And where the corresponding Hohen-Sülzener suggested mussels, the nuttiness and sweet-saline savor here reminds me more of raw clam. A striking and rarified combination of polish, clarity, and mouthwatering minerality leads into a finish of not just profound persistence but also lift and refreshment, enhanced by the palpable presence of dissolved CO2. “This wine reflects 20 years of experience with the steep, extremely stony, purely calcareous vineyards of the Zellertal,” remarked Carolin Gillot.
The Mölsheim Riesling delivers a little more fruit on the nose than its Hohen-Sülzen counterpart, but shows plenty of mineral bite and crisp acidity on the finish. (MS)
