Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2022-2025, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2022

The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Vogelzang Vineyard takes some coaxing to reveal aromas of lemongrass, lemon-lime candy, sage and tarragon, offering deeper peachy and flinty tones with time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate feels youthfully coiled, focused on flinty citrus at this stage. It has focused acidity and a pleasing textural grip but needs a year or two in bottle to fully unwind.

The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Vogelzang Vineyard comes from more gravelly loam soils and was brought up in French oak barrels (22% new). It's another beautiful, exotic expression of the variety, with notes of orange blossom, honeyed minerality, acacia flowers, baking spices, and hints of brioche. It too is rich, textured, and wonderfully balanced, with bright acidity and outstanding length. Both single vineyard releases are some of finest expressions of Sauvignon coming out of the Central Coast today. Dragonette Cellars, led by John and Steve Dragonette and Brandon Sparks-Gillis, continues to produce some of the greatest wines in the vintage. They unquestionably make some of the most singular, age-worth Sauvignon Blancs from the Central Coast, and both their Pinot Noirs and Syrahs are world-class. Looking at the vintages reviewed here, both 2019 and 2020 are great vintages at this address. I think the nod might go to the 2019s at this point, but you can’t go wrong with any of these.

The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Vogelzang Vineyard is dense, textured and inviting. Here too, the intensity of the year has pushed the wine into the more tropical realm, but there is good energy too, plus a translucent feel that keeps the wine from feeling too heavy. Butter, apple tart and dried flowers linger on the close.
