The 2010 Chambertin Grand Cru is another of the highlights of this tasting, and it's so beautifully balanced that it could be approached already. Offering up aromas of dark berries, burning embers, sweet spices and licorice, it's full-bodied, deep and pure, with a cool, layered core of fruit, bright acids and a long, sapid finish. This is a vintage that will delight purists.

The 2010 Chambertin is another drop-dead, gorgeous wine. Today it is less expressive than the Mazis, especially in its aromatics, although the fruit shows wonderful roundness and depth. Waves of fruit continue to build effortlessly as the wine opens up in the glass. Clean, saline notes frame the long, persistent finish. The Chambertin isn't one of the more immediate wines here in 2010. Instead it will require considerable patience. The Chambertin was made with 100% whole bunches and aged in 100% new barrels.

100% new oak. 97-year-old vines! 100% whole bunch. 537 square metres. Aged in 180-litre cask made especially for him each year. Very special. All worked by hand because of such high vine density. Very dense crimson. So concentrated. So dense and introvert. Such a bit of history. Great sweetness on the front palate – amazing really – and then quite dry and savoury on the finish. Definitely masculine. Very very savoury and dense. Humbling. (JR)

(from 95-year-old vineyard planted at a density of 14,000 vines per hectare): Bright ruby. Very pure aromas of blackberry, minerals and bitter chocolate complicated by sexy oak and a whiff of game. Precise and vibrant but youthfully closed. Powerful acidity and huge tannins give this very dense, chewy, dry wine a brutal character today. Dugat vinified with 100% whole clusters in order to beef up the volume of this tiny cuvee ; there will be just a single barrel of this juice.
