Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2023-2033, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2022

The 2019 Syrah 1/1, tasted from magnum, comes from own-rooted Estrella vines in the John Sebastiano vineyard. It was vinified using 50% whole clusters, co-fermented with 9% Viognier and matured for two years in a single 500-liter Ermitage barrels. Medium ruby, it has pure scents of blackcurrant, black tea, charcuterie, tar and violet. The medium-bodied palate is lighter on its feet than expected, its deep core of fruit offset by powdery tannins and fireworks of fresh acidity that highlight spicy accents on the long finish. It really opens up as it spends time in the glass, so offer it plenty of time in bottle or several hours in the decanter.

Another impressive effort is the 2019 Syrah 1/1, which hails from the Sta. Rita Hills region. This deep ruby/plum-hued beauty boasts a great nose of ripe black fruits, ground pepper, iron, and assorted, meaty, earthy nuances. With moderate acidity, full-bodied richness, and ripe tannins, it's drinking nicely today yet will certainly evolve for 10-15 years. While I always love the wines from Matthias Pippig, some of these latest releases played in what I call the “more interesting than good” category. While all good, there are hits and misses here.
