The 2006 Domaine des Escaravailles Roaix Les Hautes Granges offers up a rich, deep bouquet of blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with new oak, graphite and chocolate aromas. Beautifully pure and clean, this has nice precision, freshness and cut to the aromas and in the mouth, it’s full bodied with decadent fruit, impressive balance and a long finish with ripe tannins. This shows more precision and obvious oak than the 2007 and I’d drink it over the next 10 or so years.

Another brilliant wine is the 2006 Roaix Les Hautes Granges. A real backward Cotes du Rhone-Villages, 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache aged in barrel, it is a beautiful wine with loads of lavender intertwined with cassis and forest floor. Sumptuous and very Provencal (not always the case with Syrah from the south), this wine should drink well for 6-7 years. This is one of the up-and-coming estates to keep a lookout for, as the proprietor seems to be pushing the envelope in all the right directions. Philippe Cambie, the renowned consultant, is doing some special work with the estate’s old vine Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah.
