The first pressing of this year’s frozen harvest was bottled as a “two star” 2004 Muhlheimer Helenenkloster Riesling Eiswein** A.P. #20, and displays a remarkable degree of difference from its sibling. Peach jam and distilled pit fruit character on the nose lead to a viscous jammy, yet intensely citric palate impression. This may, like its sibling, be a bit undifferentiated, but here we have flavors of enormous concentration and brightness, leading to a rolling block of a finish that nearly bowled me over. Very honeyed, rich with great acidity. Dirk Richter said 2004 was the best year for Eiswein since 1998. This was picked on 21 December after an early, hard frost. Full and attractive already. Lots of glucose in evidence – shades of Lucozade. Slight astringent. (JR)
