Note di degustazione
(for 1.5 liters; aging in a single large French puncheon) Deep medium ruby. Superrich, oaky nose shows a strong coconut component that Mahle says is due to a sulfur addition in January. Hugely rich and powerful, with creamy, sappy flavors of black cherry, licorice, bitter chocolate and spices. Finishes chewy and a bit salty, with big, oak-driven tannins.

Only 56 cases of magnums were produced of the 2002 Syrah Pangea, which tastes like dry vintage port. Readers looking for restrained, delicately made reds should avoid this massive monster. It is incredibly well-balanced, and represents the essence of Syrah. It will last for two decades. This is a very exciting operation run by one of northern California’s new young turks, who is proving to have a formidable ability to translate cool climate vineyard sites into terrific wines ... all with no formal training.
