The 2003 Adriano is the lower-end wine from Ramos Pinto, a blend from two Quintas of Touriga Francesca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and (only 10%) Touriga Nacional. It has hints of the bubblegum notes of the 2000 Duas Quintas, although less prominent, and shows some power for its price range. It comes around fast, though, and should be ready to drink in the immediate future. The fruit flavors are a bit simple and one-dimensional, but it has some charm nonetheless. Drink now-2009. Saturated dark ruby. Roasted aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate, mocha, dried flowers and resiny wild herbs. Broad and rich if a bit youthfully sullen and lacking personality today. A strong dark chocolate element carries through on the finish, which features elevated alcohol and slightly gritty tannins. (A second bottle, of similar quality, was higher-pitched but equally chocolatey and tannic.) Needs ten years.
Very deep purple – shiny and vibrant. Low-keym rather briary, autumnal nose. Some prunes. Rather bold and confident. Dry finish but lots of fresh, ripe fruit in the middle. Finish and tannins perhaps a little too drying. (JR)
