The stunning 1998 Tokay-Pinot Gris Altenbourg Selection de Grains Nobles was produced from an entire parcel of vines, without sorting, so there is a reasonable quantity of this earth-shattering nectar (1867 bottles). Its hyper-spicy nose displays loads of botrytis-infused smoky yellow fruits. On the palate, this full-bodied wine surges forth with a panoply of apricots, peaches, and sweetened herbal tea-like flavors. Intense and massively rich, it somehow maintains an unreal precision. This impeccably balanced offering is magnificently concentrated and extravagantly textured, yet impressively elegant and graceful. Projected maturity: 2006-2025+. (picked with potential alcohol of 19%, without a trie. Electric aromas of candied orange peel and mint. Still full of carbonic gas, and thus showing harder than it really is. Rapier-like acidity cuts through the wine moderate viscosity. Impossible to assess with confidence, but should merit a score in the mid-90s.
