Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2025-2045, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Apr 2025

The 2002 Chambertin Grand Cru is youthful and concentrated, unwinding in the glass with brooding aromas of dark berries, spices, potpourri and licorice. Full-bodied, dense and structured, it's taut, chalky and mineral, with huge reserves of extract and stem tannin. As a whole, this is a suave, elegant vintage in the Côte d'Or, but this 2002 remains surprisingly impenetrable, built to reward more patience. Just under 200 liters were produced.

(just one barrel produced, from 80-year-old vines) Deep ruby. Incredibly complex, perfumed nose of blackberry, blueberry, espresso, minerals, violet and sexy oak. Penetrating and aromatic in the mouth, with powerful minerality and great energy. Palate-staining, stony finish features superb thrust and tannic grip. How often does one find Chambertin up to the potential of the vineyard? Well, you're unlikely to find this one either: about one-third of this juice is earmarked for the U.S. , which means about 85 bottles! Dugat vinified 100% whole clusters; his other grand crus were vinified with about two-thirds whole clusters.

Produced from 80 year old vines planted at a 14,000 vines per hectare density, the 2002 Chambertin is whole-cluster fermented because of the tiny amount produced and crushed by foot by Bernard’s son Loic. Its waxy black cherry aromas are intermingled with notes of tar, licorice, mint, and spices. Viscous, hugely powerful, and dense, it saturates the palate with rocks, herbs, coffee, and black fruit pastes. Immensely concentrated and profound, it must be tasted to be believed, yet since only 198 liters (about 260 bottles) of this amazing elixir were produced in 2002, only the wealthiest and luckiest wine enthusiasts will ever experience it. Projected maturity: 2012-2030+. Bravo! Wine Advocate.June, 2004
