The 2005 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste is a bit more open than the Barolo Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera, but that openness manifests itself in aromatics that are starting to show signs of development. The tannins remain forbidding, which leads me to believe the 2005 will never be fully in balance. More importantly, there is a mustiness in the aromatics that is either a less than perfect cork or barrel. I have never found the 2005 to be an especially engaging wine by Rinaldi standards. My most recent tasting has done nothing to change that.

Good medium red. Sexy, expressive nose offers plum, redcurrant, mocha, coffee, spices and underbrush. Wonderfully silky and sweet but gripping, with the impression of decadence shown by Rinaldi's wines in ripe years. This has more mid-palate richness to support its big, building tannins than the San Lorenzo-Ravera bottling. Finishes with lovely energy and impressive length. A great success in the context of the year.
The 2005 Barolo Brunate/Le Coste presents a darker shade of red fruit along with a more muscular, dense personality. This too is a relatively soft style for Rinaldi, and while some of the complexity of the finest vintages appears to be lacking, the wine nevertheless offers compelling balance and harmony.

Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. These 2005s from Giuseppe Rinaldi are pretty, mid-weight offerings. Some of the complexity and sheer explosiveness of his best vintages is missing, but in exchange the wines should drink well relatively early. Importer: Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY; tel.
