Note di degustazione
The Crystallum 2024 Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge Clay Shales Chardonnay is grown at roughly 300 meters, the same elevation as Ferrum, and sees fermentation in 600-liter Stockinger foudres. The site, of which the estate owns 30%, yields smaller bunches and concentrated fruit, translating into depth and richness. There is a terrific sense of balance between fruit volume and precision. This stands as the estate’s top Chardonnay, combining intensity with composure. The clay-rich shale soils of Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge lend both structure and a finely etched mineral backbone.

The 2024 Clay Shales is matured in 228-, 300- and 500-litre French oak, 25% new, for 11 months. This is seductive on the nose with yellow fruit, beeswax and light lanolin notes, more complexity than the Ferrum. The palate is vibrant and fresh on the entry. A silver thread of acidity keeps this sharp and vibrant, orange rind and tangerine notes emerging towards the finish that has a slightly waxy texture. Very fine.
