Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, I found it difficult to get past the fog of reduction on Château de Puligny-Montrachet's 2014 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Folatières, deprived of the tension and mineralité of its peers. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite conservative in style with straightforward, tropical-tinged fruit. It just lacks the X-Factor that some of the wines from this vineyard show in 2014 and is not the most memorable wine in the pack.

Bright lemon-yellow. Tighter and less expressive on the nose than the Chalumeaux. Also less fruity on the palate but highly concentrated, showing an attractive fresh sweetness to its saline mineral flavors. Boasts very good texture and weight for 2014. This wine was better than the Chalumeaux through its élevage , noted winemaker Brian Sieve.

Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
