Punteggio 93+/100 · Da bere 2025-2040, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2016

(two-third Charmes and one-third Mazoyères): Bright ruby-red. Highly complex scents of black raspberry, wild faded rose, menthol, bitter chocolate and licorice. Juicy, spicy and round, with a firm spine of acidity invigorating the dark fruit, spice and floral flavors. Finishes lively and very long, with serious tannins buffered by mid-palate material. Strong juice!

(two-thirds Charmes and one-third Mazoyères; just one-third vendange entier ): Bright, dark red-ruby. Wild aromas of black and blue fruits accented by rose petal and sweet spices. Suppler in texture than the Lavaux (due to a lower percentage of stems?), in a distinctly round, horizontal style but with good energy and lift. Fleshy dark fruit and floral flavors are sweet and persistent, with ripe, chewy tannins providing shape. Very harmonious grand cru.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is nicely defined on the nose, not a million miles away from Bernard's Lavaux Saint Jacques '13 at the moment. The palate is more powerful though, with very supple ripe, almost thick tannins, and a very weighty finish that feels more like a Clos-de-Bèze. This muscular Charmes-Chambertin will need several years in bottle.

30- to 40-year-old vines. Contains one-third of Mazoyères since 1996. 40% whole bunch. 100% new oak. Sappy and substantial on the nose. Racy and very fine tannins. Quite a bit of freshness and substance, Still embryonic but not at all painful. Some sweetness. (JR)
