I am touched drinking this red, which has such a subtle and complex character, and it reminds me of the greatest vintage in the 1930s. I think of my grandmother and all the things that happened then because it has an energy and beauty with subtle plums and dried oranges. So complete. 55% tempranillo with the rest graciano, garnacha, and manzuelo. Bottled in 1974, after 460 months in oak barrels.

The 1934 Castillo Ygay Reserva Especial was produced with a blend of 55% Tempranillo, 18% Mazuelo, 16% Garnacha and 11% Graciano that spent eight months in tank, 48 months in semi-new barrels and 408 months in old American oak barrels before bottling. It was bottled in July 1974, that's 40 years after the harvest! It has 13.1% alcohol with 6.7 grams of acidity (tartaric) and 0.75 grams of volatile acidity and a pH of 3.09. It was a very good year with 353.3 liters of rain. This could very well be my favorite wine of the vertical tasting. It has incredible elegance, subtleness and balance, with notes of development but great freshness, old furniture and cherries in liqueur, and it has a silky palate, with resolved tannins and an incredibly long finish. It's spicy and develops notes of chicken broth and curry.
