The 2011 Tinto, the Estate red, is a 70/30 blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, aged for 14 months in French oak of varying ages. It is curiously understated this year, but that shouldn't detract from how lovely it is. With subdued tannins and an elegant rather than concentrated feel in the mid-palate, it is a well-balanced wine that eschews the obvious. Refined and emphasizing finesse, it has more of a Margaux-type feel than a big Douro red in 2011. It won't draw many "wows," but it will drain fast at the table. This is set for release in mid-2016. It should be pretty much ready to drink.

Wonderful aromas of blueberry, tar, lead pencil and violet. Full-bodied and very tight and silky. Lots of black licorice. Just drinking right now, although a little tight and tough.
70% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca. Lots of rain in the winter. Hot in the summer. Very dry. Rescued by rains late August. Juicy and lively and sinewy. Very polished. Very much an urbane cosmopolite. Sappy and savoury. Much lighter than the 2009. (JR)
