Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2019-2034, Jeb Dunnuck, Jan 2019

The only wine I was able to taste from this estate, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon gives up a deep purple/ruby color to go with a smoky, masculine, black-fruited bouquet that includes plenty of blackcurrants, toasted spice, charcoal, and chocolate. This ripe, sexy beast hits the palate with full-bodied richness and depth, a flamboyant, layered texture, and sweet tannins. It's a big, pleasure-bent effort that has the depth and balance to drink nicely for 15-20 years.

Zakin's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a real stunner. Savory, dense and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2016 has so much to offer. Dried rose petal, lavender, mint and kirsch give the 2016 striking savory nuance to play off a core of bright, beautifully chiseled fruit. Vivid and super-expressive, the 2016 is another stellar wine from Zakin.

Blended of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc aged for 20 months in 74% new French oak, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is deep garnet-purple in color and leaps from the glass with crushed blackcurrants, warm plums and fresh blackberries with hints of violets, star anise, tobacco, underbrush and yeast extract plus a waft of pencil shavings. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy with fantastic intensity and energy, finishing on a beautiful mineral note.

Powerful and tannic, and yet also remarkably vivid, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is shaping up to be another gem from this tiny Howell Mountain property. Graphite, smoke, leather, menthol, game, tobacco and a host of dark flavors give the wine its virile, imposing personality. The big Howell Mountain tannins need to soften, but there is time for that.
