Classic traditional middle Mosel. Finely etched bloomy fruit. Quite sweet but with miraculous freshness. Difficult not to slurp immediately but it will should become much more complex with bottle age. (JR)

The Fritz Haag 2007 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Spatlese A.P. #7 features lily perfume, pink grapefruit, pineapple, and peach in an effusively rich display of fruit suffused with alkaline, saline, and savory crustacean mineral character, with hints of citrus zest and brown spices adding allure and invigoration in a long finish. The waft and sweetness of floral perfume as well as the tropical ripeness here are well matched to the wine’s delicacy and its more overt sweetness vis a vis the Juffer Spatlese. I imagine it will continue to repay 25 or more years’ cellaring. Oliver and Wilhelm Haag have done it again, scoring consistent and sensational success throughout their range. And if 2007 cannot – like 2006 – be compared with any iconic vintage of yore (in 2006’s case, 1953) so much the more exciting. Racy lime-juice crunchy fruit. Quite delicate. Punchy. Just a bit stolid. (JR)
