Note di degustazione
From the very oldest plot of the cru next to the Rotlay, with more than 100-year-old ungrafted vines with extremely low yields--but highly aromatic berries that are as great as lentils--the 2014 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese feinherb Uralte Reben opens with a very deep, clear, concentrated and slightly flinty, highly complex bouquet with some herbal flavors. Round, piquant and highly elegant on the palate, with some nutty and almond flavors, this is a very noble and concentrated, perfectly balanced, lingeringly salty Riesling of great elegance and expression. This is world-class Mosel Riesling with an almost endless finish. It's rather smoothly textured, but in the finest way. A Must Buy of the 2014 vintage! Great aging potential. The old plot is named Kackert and was owned by the Freiherr von Schorlemer Estate for almost 100 years. It is one of the very best parcels in the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and this wine shows why.

This bottling from ungrafted “ancient vines” in three sectors of the Sonnenuhr Einzellage (many approaching if not exceeding 100 years of age) exhibits a juicy abundance of apple, honeydew melon and pear; an exceptional sense of transparency to nuances – wet stone, mint, oregano, flowers, freshly milled grain and citrus peels; and unusual textural refinement for its vintage. Efficacious yet harmonious acidity and very discreet, subtly integrated sweetness make for a model of balance, and this Riesling’s mouthwatering finish reels you back for the next sip. “These tiny-berried, loose clusters can take abuse,” remarked Selbach of their ability to both withstand rot and benefit from slower pressing. “At the same time,” he added, “their high ratio of stem to berry insures excellent acid-buffering. For all of these reasons, I vinified this wine separately. And since the results were highly distinctive, not least for their silky texture, I bottled it separately as well.”
