The 1990 Côte Rôtie La Mordorée is clearly at the tail end of its drinking window, but it’s still a regal old gal and is a wine you’d love to curl up with beside a fire on cool autumn day. Ruby-hued with a kiss of amber at the rim, it offers a classy – and classic – mature Côte Rôtie perfume of sweet red and black fruits, menthol, smoked meats, and floral/incense-like nuances. Still beautifully balanced on the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a soft, supple mouthfeel, resolved tannins, and a great finish. It builds beautifully with air and has plenty of fruit and texture. It’s certainly not going to get better, but it’s just a fabulously mature, complex, nuanced bottle today. If you have ‘em, drink ‘em.

Bright ruby with a pale rim. Lots of acidity and rather obvious sweetness. A bit chewy on the end but not very graceful. (JR)
The saturated dark ruby/purple color is followed by an awesome nose that offers copious quantities of sweet black fruits, flowers, toasty new oak, and smoky bacon fat. In the mouth there is superb concentration, a sweet, expansive texture, and a mind-boggling, long finish. This lavishly rich Cote Rotie, which is already delicious, is capable of lasting for 10-15 years. Last tasted 7/96.
