Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2008-2018, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Oct 2015

55% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier.  Disgorged 2007, TA 5.3 g/l (expressed as sulphuric), pH 2.95. Pale gold. Smells younger than the 99 and the 2000. Delicate notes of acacia honey with a touch of something herbal too, maybe chamomile, almost dusty. On the palate it is broader but still fine and tight. A cedary note comes back on the finish, still has lots of life and energy. (JH)

Very toasty and interesting on the nose. Tight knit with just a hint of apple skin astringency. A little too chewy for great pleasure at the moment? Not that long. (JR)

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2013-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2008

The 1998 Cuvée William Deutz flows from the glass with compelling layers of flowers, apricots, succulent pears, minerals and smoke. This Champagne offers a gorgeous combination of mineral-driven freshness with a richly-textured core of fruit. The Cuvée William Deutz should continue to drink beautifully for at least another decade. For the William Deutz the estate uses a blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier.

Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. Admittedly it has been a few years since I last tasted the Deutz Champagnes, so I was not fully prepared for the consistently outstanding quality of virtually all these new releases. Although Deutz has been owned by Roederer since 1992, this is the only property in the group that is run in an autonomous fashion, as the Rouzaud family didn’t want to risk losing the estate’s unique identity by consolidation winemaking functions. The Deutz Champagnes undergo full malolactic fermentation and at their best offer a polished, creamy style that drinks well early but that can also age.
