Based largely on Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in a mix of new and used French oak, the 2021 Rothwell Hyde is the introductory cuvée for this estate, though it's far from a typical entry-level wine. It shows currants, cassis, graphite, and tobacco-driven aromatics and is medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and excellent overall balance. This is another brilliant wine from Brad Grimes that drinks well today and will evolve gracefully over the next two decades. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2021 Rothwell Hyde is fabulous. In fact, it is one of the very best Rothwells I have tasted. All of the pedigree of this great vintage comes through in spades. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, incense, licorice and pressed violet soar from the glass. Naturally, the Rothwell doesn't have the richness of the top Abreu wines, but it comes very, very close. Abreu fans will flip out over the 2021.
Composed of certain lots from Abreu's vineyards that didn't get incorporated into the singe-vineyard wines, the 2021 Rothwell Hyde Proprietary Red is a darn fine wine in its own right, adding subtle cedar and herb nuances to its dark berry fruit. It's full-bodied in the mouth, perhaps a bit open-knit in feel but also almost approachable, with a long, velvety finish. It's definitely a wine you could dip into while waiting for the single-vineyard efforts to mature, but it should still drink well through 2040.
