Deep ruby-purple, the 2016 Syrah Brosseau Vineyard (the vineyard is certified organic) opens with blueberry liqueur, cassis, a hint of toasted coconut, black earth, aniseed, mint leaves and charcuterie with bay leaf accents. Medium-bodied, it's rich and intense with a frame of lightly chewy tannins, great freshness and a long, flavorful finish. This is youthfully flamboyant and should develop well in bottle over the next few years. 300 cases produced.

This warmer AVA has produced a ripe, lifted effort in the 2016 Syrah Brosseau. Bing cherries, singed leather, some minerality, and licorice notes all give way to a medium to full-bodied Syrah that has an interesting mix of ripe aromas and flavors and bright, juicy acidity. There’s plenty to like here, but it doesn’t have the seamlessness found in some of the other wines in the lineup. I had a great tasting with winemaker Wells Gunthrie and these latest releases show elegant, vibrant profiles. These aren’t for those craving powerful, rich wines, and they shine for their purity of fruit, balanced, and singular personalities.
The 2016 Syrah Brousseau is shaping up to be a real beauty. Silky, layered and polished, the Brousseau has a tone of potential. The 50% whole clusters are barely perceptible. Delicate and nuanced, with superb persistence and depth, the 2016 has a lot to offer.
